International trade news and resources from World Trade Center Utah

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Fellow Globalists,

I just stopped by VisAbility, one of our excellent visa offices in Salt Lake City providing expert assistance to Utahns traveling Lew Cramer, president of the World Trade Center Utahoverseas. Anna Martin reported that VisAbility is now processing hundreds of passports, visas and other travel documents monthly because Utahns are increasingly traveling abroad for business, travel and service opportunities. This is exciting to know that we are expanding our horizons—and opportunities-- worldwide, and our World Trade Center Utah goal is to assist in any way possible in these overseas adventures. Please visit our website at www.wtcut.com for further helpful links.

Go Utah! Go Global!

Sincerely,
Lew Cramer

Looking to Export? Think Regionally!

Source: Export.gov
When Stewart Dahlberg, International Sales Manager of J.D. Streett and Company, Inc., of Maryland Heights, Missouri, was looking to boost his international sales, he found a partner in the U.S. Commercial Service and its St. Louis Export Assistance Center. A manufacturer of automotive lubricants, Streett made new-to-market sales in Panama by tapping into export counseling, trade leads, and the Gold Key Service, which provides pre-arranged business appointments in overseas markets. Once established in Panama, Streett was able to facilitate exponential sales growth throughout Central America.

Today, more and more small and mid-sized U.S. companies are following Streett’s example by thinking regionally: First establishing a presence in an international market, then expanding sales into neighboring countries. (Read more)

Corda Technologies’ Dashboard Technologist Presents Graphics Research Paper at Conference in Germany

Kenric B. White, an expert Dashboard Technologist at Corda Technologies, presented a graphics research paper at the Symposium on Interactive Ray Tracing 2007 in Ulm, Germany on Sept. 12. A Poisson disk point set is a sampling method that produces a well-distributed, uniform sample. Current methods used are very time consuming. There have been some new methods published recently that speed the process, but are complicated. The new method proposed by Messrs. White, Cline and Egbert is not only up to 271 times faster than the latest, state-of-the-art methods, but is significantly simpler as well. (Read more)

Culture Corner

Country: France

French shake hands (light grip, quick shake) upon greeting and parting. Traditional greetings in France are: Bonjour! (Good day), Comment allez-vous? (How are you?); informal Salut, (Hi), Ça va? (How are you?). Courtesy titles are Monsieur (Mr.), Madam (Mrs.). Professional Titles are used in the business environment, which is very hierarchical. Business cards (the other side translated into French) are exchanged after the initial introductions. Wait until you are invited before using someone's first name. Maintain direct eye contact while speaking. Appointments are necessary and should be made at least 2 weeks in advance; avoid July and August (reserved for vacation). Meetings are to discuss issues, not to make decisions. Decision making happens at the highest level of business hierarchy. Business attire is formal. Businessmen do not loosen their ties or take off their jackets in the office. In general, the French dress with great style and care, on the conservative side (avoid bright colors), and appreciate when visitors show the same degree of care to appearance.

Gift giving is not the norm in business culture, but for social events gifts are expected. Good gifts are the ones associated with intellectual pursuits. Do not include your business card with a gift, it would breach French business etiquette. Flowers should be given in odd numbers (Except for unlucky 13). Avoid red roses (associated with love), white lilies or chrysanthemums (associated with funerals), red carnations (bad will). Gifts are opened right away. Do not drop in uninvited. If you are invited to a French house for dinner, under no circumstances should you arrive more than 10 minutes later than invited. Wait to be told where to sit, do not place feet on tables and chairs. French cuisine is famous and formal dinner might consist of 8 to 12 courses. Lettuce is not cut, but folded with fork. Fruit is peeled and sliced before eating. Your hands should be always above the table, never in your lap; you can rest your wrists (but not your elbows) on the table. Bad manners: speaking with hands in pockets, chewing gum in public, using personal items (comb, handkerchief etc) in public.
