ILWU Clerical Workers Resume Contract Talks

The Journal of Commerce Online says negotiations have resumed between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union and waterfront employers on contracts covering several hundred office clerical workers at marine terminals in the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

“The clerical workers' contracts are separate from those of unionized terminal
Cargo-Linkworkers covered by a contract between the ILWU and the Pacific Maritime Association. The ILWU, however, has said that if there is a strike, terminal workers will honor the office workers' picket lines, and effectively close the nation's busiest container port complex. If that happens, a challenge is expected from the PMA.

"Steve Berry, lead negotiator for the employers, said before negotiations resumed today that progress has been "slow and disappointing." He said many issues had been resolved but that there was no progress on management's top goals, which mostly center on work practices. Berrry said employers have offered a package that would boost total wages and benefits nearly 10 percent over three years.

"The clerical workers' base wage would rise from the current $37.50 an hour to $38 the first year, $38.60 the second and $39.20 the third. The contracts cover about 650 full-time positions and approximately 200 temporary positions. Negotiations set common wages for clerical workers at all terminals, but each of the ports' 14 marine terminals has a separate agreement tailored to the individual location. The clerical workers' contracts expired July 1 but the employees have stayed on the job while negotiations continue.”
