International trade news and resources from World Trade Center Utah

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Friends,
This week we are focusing on upcoming trade missions to India and other Asian destinations. Several of our Lew Cramer, president of the World Trade Center Utahlegislators just returned from a successful visit to China. In the midst of these foreign travel opportunities, many people in Utah ask: Why is global business relevant or important to me? My own business is doing just fine right now. The right answers to these questions are absolutely critical to our future and our children’s future. For starters, if we are not planning to be competitive overseas, we can nonetheless plan on our international competitors coming to Utah to compete against us—whether physically, or in a blink of an eye over the internet. Look also where the new growth markets are—India and China alone are creating three billion new consumers. And even closer to home, Mexico and Canada provide huge new market opportunities in a large number of industries for our Utah companies. Come learn more at the World Trade Center Utah. We look forward to sharing the opportunities (and successful secrets) of the new global economy with you.

Sincerely,
Lew Cramer

Sides Working Out Details in ILWU Contract Talks

The Journal of Commerce reports that contract negotiations between unionized office clerical workers and shipping lines in Los Angeles-Long Beach continued at a painstaking pace Thursday.
Cargo-Link"Negotiators for the Office Clerical Unit of International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 63 and 14 shipping lines and terminal operators were struggling with technical language in the health and welfare provisions of the contract, said John Fageaux, president of the union...Cargo operations at the ports continued without incident and the union has not mentioned the threat of a strike since last weekend."

Strike Update

Tim Cummings, from North American Logistics, Inc., tells CargoLink that shippers are diverting cargo to the Pacific North West (PNW), which may or may not be a good strategy since the PNW has limited capacity and shippers may risk having containers rolled if PNW vessels are overbooked. Prior to diverting cargo, Cummings suggests shippers check with the origin partner and determine whether there is sufficient capacity.
