A Business Case for Diversity

Source: The Employers Council

If diversity drives innovation, it could have a significant impact on a company's growth potential. It makes sense for providers of goods and services to have a workforce representative of the population – especially if clients are diverse or the competitive environment involves other cultures and countries. A diverse work-team might include employees from different cultures, ethnicities, generations, economic and educational backgrounds, etc.

Bringing a diverse workforce together brings new and different ideas. Two diverse people can look at exactly the same thing and have completely different associations about it. People and teams that break new ground also generate and execute far more ideas. The more that diverse employees interact, share and collaborate, the more ideas you have and the better chance you have of finding the right solution to a particular business challenge.

Sources to target for diversity talent are:

Diversity is about leveraging the skills and talents of all employees to enable the organization to compete – thus increasing the bottom line.

Salt Lake SBDC Holds 3rd Annual 'Law School for Business People'

If you have ever wanted legal advice for your business, but haven't had the time or wherewithal to seek out the best attorneys for your particular situation, now is your chance--at a fraction of what it would cost you otherwise.

Thanks to the Salt Lake Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and Salt Lake Community College (SLCC), now you can receive four hours of business/legal training from some the state's top legal experts on Oct. 2, during the 3rd Annual Law School for Business People.

Aubrey Davis, event coordinator, says the Salt Lake SBDC has brought together 16 top legal experts, who will teach 50-minute courses covering every-day legal issues that have the most impact on your business. The sessions are covered in four tracks and attendees can select any four sessions they wish to attend.

Topics Presented:

  • How to Reduce Your Employer Liability Issues
  • Immigration Law for Employers
  • Do’s and Don’ts of Hiring
  • Non-compete Non-Disclosure Agreements
  • Taxation Perspectives of C-Corps, S-Corps, LLCs & Sole Proprietorships
  • Collecting Your Receivables
  • Basic Patent & Trademark Law
  • Different Kinds of Intellectual Property & How to Protect it Without a Patent
  • Going Into Business With Family & Friends
  • Risk Management – Primer on Tort Liability
  • Mediation & Arbitration: Alternative Dispute Resolution
  • Contract Landmines: Avoiding the Pitfalls
  • How to Bring an Investor in Legally
  • Developing a Successful Exit Strategy
  • Legal Considerations in Buying or Selling a Business
  • How to Determine the Value of Your Business

Davis says each session is presented by a top, local attorney with expertise in the topic being covered. The total cost for four sessions is $50 if you pre-register before Oct. 1; $75 otherwise. Late registrations will be accepted on Oct. 2 from 7:15 to 7:45 a.m. The event begins at 7:45 in the Karen Gail Conference Center on the SLCC Miller campus. The breakout sessions begin at 8 a.m.

"Normally, it would cost $200 to $250 for a one-hour session with any of the top attorneys presenting, so $50 is a real bargain!" Davis says.

Since the inaugural "Law School for Business People" three years ago, the event has become more and more popular, for both the attorneys presenting and the participants, but their isn't a real limit on capacity, according to Davis. Sessions have been limited to three tracks in previous years. This year a fourth track was added because of the increasing popularity.

"We want the business people who attend to come away with real knowledge of the topics they have selected, so we have worked hard to fit the best legal expertise with the topics being presented," Davis says.

Preparing for the Worst

There is no crying in baseball, and there are no "sick days" when you run your own business.
