From the Director
Spring Events
The groundhog may have been right! It certainly has been
beautiful here along the Wasatch Front; spring is definitely
around t he
corner. Another sure sign spring is on the way – business
gatherings are scheduled throughout the state.
The first large business gathering of the season is scheduled
for next week. The Governor’s Utah Economic Summit ‘07 is being
held in Salt Lake City at the Grand America Hotel on Thursday,
March 22. This all day conference has five tracks –
Entrepreneurship, Business Law, Business Development, Business
Promotion and Business Tools. Use this
link
for more information and to register.
In April, the Salt Lake Chamber is hosting its annual Business
to Business Expo at the Salt Palace on April 25-26. Be sure to
check your local chamber of commerce and economic development
calendars for events in your area. Let us know if you have a
business event in the near future and we’ll do our best to
include you on our calendar.
As always you can find smaller networking events and training
opportunities listed on the TCOB Calendar.
Enjoy the weather, and take advantage of the spring events – its
time to brush off the winter blahs and get ready to take your
business to the next level.

Vice President and Manager
Zions Business Resource Center
NFIB Publishes Checklist for Managing a Small Business' Finances
"Small-business owners need to be informed about every aspect of
financing, from bookkeeping to cash-flow projections to securing
loans from bankers. While you may not need to be an expert on
each of these aspects (and, really, you can't be unless you have
an accounting degree), the more you understand about these vital
components of small-business finance, the greater the chance for
your company's success."

Should You Deduct that Home Office?
From Forbes.com
"Ah, the virtues of the home office. If you work alone, you can
do it in your pajamas; the commute is a flight of stairs; and
your ever-beckoning pantry is just a few feet away. And then
there's the juicy tax deduction."
Or is there?

“This is a great opportunity to sharpen the saw,” says Jed
Call, vice president of business development for the Newspaper
Agency Corporation. “For those who miss the summit, it will be
too bad that they do.” He expects about 800 to 1,000
participants to attend this first summit, which will be an
annual event.
The summit will bring together leaders and
executives of business, labor, academia and government in a
common goal to collaborate, innovate and lead Utah to greater
prosperity. The Summit will feature Governor Huntsman as the
keynote speaker, who will set forth the vision of state
economic development and opportunities for businesses to
prosper in this thriving economy. Robert Spendlove, state
economic authority, will also set forth the trends and
projections of where business is heading.
“The Summit is the place to hear the experts speak about the
current economy and the future plans to sustain and maintain
growth,” according to Call.
During the Summit, participants will have the opportunity to
attend Executive Breakout Tracks, allowing for more focus on
subjects of interest in their industry. Many of the Summit
Tracks will qualify for continuing education in various
professional fields. Topics covered include business law,
marketing, management, transportation, commercial real estate,
international business, public relations and much more.
Summit participants will learn about competing successfully in the
global marketplace, enjoy breakfast and even have the unique
opportunity to listen in as young entrepreneurs pitch their
business plans to angel investors. Attendees will gain
some great insight as they hear the angel investors discuss
the strengths and weaknesses of each pitch, and come away with
strong understanding of how to make their respective
businesses more attractive to equity investors.
