Mitt Romney's recent foreign tour of England, Israel and Poland generated a number of statements characterized in the media as gaffes. We asked our insiders whether those statements, gaffes or not, would have an effect on the 2012 campaign.

How much of an effect will Mitt Romney's well-documented missteps during his just completed foreign tour have on the 2012 campaign?

Some anonymous comments:

"They weren't gaffes. He told the truth. London had the problems he mentioned and there are cultural differences between the Israelis and Palestinians. Just because some don't like the truth, doesn't change reality."

"Some trouble - just not in Utah."

"Only the talking heads and political insiders care about Romney's so-called missteps."

"I'm so afraid we're getting another George W Bush!"

"Romney's gaffes, but also his failure to address the central international issues that are actually on people's minds, will probably make it easier for the Obama Campaign to make some independent voters even more nervous than they already are about Romney's ability in foreign affairs."

"It is still a little early for most of the voters to take much note. However, it did not help him. Since the race is likely to be quite close, he will have to do a better job of demonstrating presidential qualities or some of these "small things" may be the difference in who ultimately wins."

"He will make more, so these will be forgotten soon."

"But I believe his recent comments overseas are the warm-up to bigger insights into his personality and frankly, his position of privilege and arrogance. Voters will begin to pay more attention after Labor Day, and I expect more gaffes in diplomacy and on other topics."

"This will blow over the second he chooses his VP."

"Just because the media calls those remarks "gaffes", doesn't make them so. It just shows how badly those outlets are in the tank for Pres. Obama."

"Most undecided voters aren't paying close attention to the campaign yet, and for die hard supporters of either candidate, the missteps probably don't matter much. This trip will make it hard for Romney to criticize Obama's foreign policy efforts, moving forward. It also wasted precious time when Romney could have been more effectively talking about the economy where he actually has a more compelling point to make."

"Conservatives will still vote for him, while shaking their heads. UNLESS a candidate is nominated from the Convention floor...such as Jeb Bush?"

"If Bush lasted eight years with all his gaffes and missteps, I doubt if the Republicans who dislike Obama will care that Mitt Romney is not adept at foreign relations. I hope he continues to do as poorly during the debates, however!"

"He will be forever branded as a knucklehead. Even Bambi's friend Flower knows, 'If you can't say nothin' nice, don't say nothin' at all.' And he's a skunk."

"But the cumulative effect of many misstatements is starting to take a toll. Maybe he should stay stateside. He has been more disciplined at home."

"It's just another example of how he is not ready for Prime Time."

"If he had stayed away from London, it would have been much less noticed but it got picked up in the pre-Olympics coverage rather than overshadowed by it. I think his comments in Israel were much more problematic but they were overshadowed by the Olympics."

"Voters are looking to see what kind of President he might make; these gaffes suggest a tendency to go off half-cocked or with insufficient information and sensitivity. That cannot help him."

"Voters are quick to forget. Plus I'm sure his VP pick will have foreign experience to help balance out the ticket."

"Voters really don't pay much attention, besides, with 3 months still to go, no one will even remember."

"You mean the 'well-documented missteps' invented by a press corps still so in the tank for Obama it can't report straight news? Pu-leeze!"

"The focus will continue to be on the economy. His gaffes won't hurt him, but he literally wasted his time out there."

"What missteps? Much ado about nothing."

This "article" begins with the assumption that Romney's comments were "mistakes." They were not. He told the truth, and the mainscream media declared what he said to be mistakes. That's not the same thing. I expect better out of utahpolicy.com, but I supposed I'll have to lower my expectations.
