Friday Buzz

Have a great holiday weekend! To feel a little patriotic zeal, everyone ought to take in at least one fireworks show, parade, or community celebration. And everyone ought to eat at least one hot dog, hamburger or green Jello at a picnic. Here's a list of weekend activities statewide. Check out your community.

News Highlights: Ongoing Nancy Workman saga: The Salt Lake Tribune and KSL TV report on the mayor commenting publicly for the first time. Prosecutor David Yocom is accused of engaging in a personal political vendetta as reported by the Deseret Morning News. The Morning News and the Daily Herald report that Provo City is selling Provo Cable to new iProvo service provider as Provo moves toward construction of a ubiquitous fiber network.

National Conventions: If you're really interested in the national conventions coming up at the end of July (Democratic) and the end of August (Republican), you can sign up for free daily e-mail alerts from National Journal by going to this Web site. National Journal does an excellent job with these things and the free subscription also provides access to other NJ publications during the conventions.

Political Web Site: If you like to follow the presidential race, congressional races and gubernatorial races, look at the latest polls and get “insider” information, then Charlie Cook's Web site is a terrific resource. There is a lot of free information, but if you want the most up-to-date stuff you pay a fairly hefty subscription fee for Cook's newsletter. He rates both Utah's gubernatorial race and the 2nd District congressional race as tossups.
