Editor's Note: Links to articles in The Salt Lake Tribune aren't available because of a change in the Tribune's Web site. Since last week they have been using numbered Web addresses instead of the traditional ones (such as www.sltrib.com/...). Our email distribution service, Constant Contact, can't handle numeric Web addresses. We are sorry for the inconvenience and we're working on a solution. Meanwhile, Tribune articles links do work on our home page, www.UtahPolicy.com, where you can always find the current issue of Agenda Utah.

Wednesday Buzz

News Highlights

Will the conservation lands measure be on the November ballot? The Salt Lake Tribune (Joe Baird) reports that election officials say no, but backers still have hope. Lee Benson in the Deseret Morning News weighs in on Nancy Workman s current troubles. Utah Democrats like John Edwards as John Kerry s VP, in a report by the Standard-Examiner.

New Matheson Newsletter

Scott Matheson, Jr., has initiated a new e-mail newsletter updating supporters on campaign progress. In the July 2 edition he describes meetings, media interviews and other campaign activities, and encourages volunteers, with links to more information on his Web site, www.mathesonforgovernor.com.  The newsletter is a smart thing to do. It shows supporters, the news media and the competition that the campaign is active and moving ahead. I couldn't find a place to sign up for it on the Web site, but I'm assuming you can get on the list if you send an e-mail to: Scott@MathesonForGovernor.com. It would be helpful if past newsletter editions were posted on the Web site.

Issues Brief on Crime

The Utah Foundation's Utah Priorities Project has published another Research Brief, this one on crime in Utah. This is the eighth of a series of Research Briefs to be published by the Utah Priorities Project. Issues briefs are being published about every two weeks during the 2004 election season, and they focus on issues identified as top priorities in the 2004 Utah Priorities Poll. The idea is that an in-depth focus on important issues will encourage candidates and voters to discuss them and elevate the debate in the gubernatorial campaign. See other research briefs, candidate information, and sign up for your own free subscription at www.utahpriorities.net.

Keep Party Activists Informed

Todd Weiler, Davis County Republican chair, is doing a nice job of keeping Davis Republicans informed by periodically sending them an e-mail update on party happenings. He includes links to national Republican information as well. To get on his list send an e-mail to toddweiler@parrylaw.com. Weiler's efforts show how party leaders can easily keep the party faithful informed. One positive result is a list of committed party members who can do volunteer work at the neighborhood level.

Leadership Tip:

"A business short on capital can borrow money, and one with a poor location can move. But a business short on leadership has little chance for survival.... Leadership is what gives an organization its vision and its ability to translate that vision into reality. Without this translation, a transaction between leaders and followers, there is no organizational heartbeat."

-Leaders: The Strategies for Taking Charge, Warren Bennis & Burt Nanus, P. 20-21.
