Thursday Buzz

News Highlights

Good analysis on poll results by Jerry Spangler of the Deseret Morning News. Huntsman ahead of Matheson 51-38 percent, but among highly interested voters the spread is 8 points, 49-41 percent. Nancy Workman and Peter Corroon are very close in another Morning News/KSL TV survey. Workman has 31% support; Corroon, 27%; and Independent Merrill Cook, 12%. Jim Matheson will skip upcoming Democratic Convention in Boston, The Salt Lake Tribune reports.

Contributions to Society

As NBA stars are being hired by the Jazz and other teams, it's interesting to compare their salaries with what we pay political leaders and government workers. I'm as big a Jazz fan as anyone else, and I don't question the market realities that demand enormous sports salaries. Still, it's an interesting commentary on society if what we spend our money on reflects what we value most.

The Jazz will pay Carlos Boozer $68 million over six years, or $11.3 million a year. That salary is hard for most of us even to fathom. But here's some perspective: Gov. Olene Walker makes $101,600 a year, less than Boozer will make in one game. The average school teacher makes around $39,000 a year, less than one-third what Boozer will make per game. A teacher makes .00345 of what Boozer will make annually.

The Lakers are wooing Kobe Bryant with a 7-year $136 million proposal, or $19.4 million per year. Attorney General Mark Shurtleff makes $85,400 per year, or somewhat less than a third of what Bryant will make in one game. A typical Utah soldier in Iraq makes from $18,000 per year to $36,000 per year, depending on rank and length of service. An average Utah Highway Patrol trooper makes $34,000 a year. Bryant will make more than $50,000 PER DAY, 365 days a year.

Convention Trivia

On July 16, 1964, Barry Goldwater accepted the Republican presidential nomination in San Francisco, proclaiming, “Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice” and “moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.” He went on to lose to Democratic nominee Lyndon B. Johnson.

Since 1832, the Democratic Party has held 43 national conventions. The 44th, starting July 26, will be the first ever in Boston. Of the 43 Democratic nominees, 19 went on to win the election. That number is padded by Franklin D. Roosevelt's four nominations and wins, from 1932 to 1944.

Leadership Tip:
Proper Use of Power

In his book The Power Principle, Blaine Lee argues that "we should never in the slightest violate the unique agency of an individual despite the position we have over them. Whatever power that can be gained through manipulation and control will eventually fail... True power and influence never comes through fear [and] deception..."

He quotes Helen Keller, who eloquently described the impact of a person who leads through honor, not fear and deception: "There are red letter days in our lives when we meet people who thrill us like a fine poem, people whose handshake is a brimful of unspoken sympathy and whose sweet, rich nature imparts to our eager impatient spirits a wonderful restfulness... Perhaps we never saw them before and they may never cross our life's path again; but the influence of their calm, mellow nature is a libation poured out upon our discontent, and we feel its healing touch as the ocean feels the mountain stream freshening its brine..."

In other words, says Lee, "I can buy your hand but not the deepest loyalty and devotion of your heart. I can buy your back but not the finest and most creative thinking of your mind. Loyalty must be earned, not demanded. Power and influence with honor take time and must be earned. We can't keep pulling up the flowers to see how the roots are coming."
