News Highlights

Group proposes focus on culture and arts to revitalize downtown, reports The Salt Lake Tribune. Deseret Morning News reports that Utah campaign finance laws get D- in national study. Paper vs. electronic voting discussed at NCSL meeting, as reported by Standard Examiner and Tribune.

Quote of the Day

"Clean rivers and streams, working family farms and ranches, community parks and open spaces, this is the core of what makes Utah a great place to live. In November, we will have a chance to ensure this core remains intact and healthy for our children and grandchildren."

- Bud Scruggs, a sponsor of initiative petition, in Deseret Morning News story about open space advocates appealing to Supreme Court.

Utahns Heading to Romneyland

Twenty-seven happy Utah delegates, along with a handful of Utah news reporters and some family members and friends, are packing their bags and flying to Boston in the next day or two to revel in Democratic camaraderie at next week's Democratic National Convention.

Among the Utah news organizations sending reporters to cover the Utah delegation are The Salt Lake Tribune, Dan Harrie; Deseret Morning News, Lisa Riley Roche; KTVX Channel 4, Chris Vanocur; and KSL Television, Richard Piatt. To assist her reporting, Roche asked the delegates to fill out a fairly detailed questionnaire on a wide variety of issues related to the convention. If she gets a good response, the answers should make for interesting reading.

Here's the list of the Utah delegates from the party web site: Lucy Vasquez, Beverly White, Carlos Vasquez, Todd Taylor, Nichole Adams, Jennifer Wilson, Mike Picardi, Barbara Taylor, Barbara Curtis, Ed Mayne, David Wilson, Emily Justice, Joe Hatch, Patrice Arent, Eli Raindancer, David Yocom, Michael Braxton, Charlie Luke, Virginia Wickwar, Gill Blonsley, Debbie White, Andrew Gallegos, Karen Mayne, Tony Montano, Rocky Anderson, and Sarah Mulhern. The Exoro Group's own Maura Carabello is also a delegate and will be sending dispatches to Agenda Utah from Boston.

Leadership Tip:
The Use of Power

Every politician was elected to with the expectation that he or she would judiciously wield the awesome coercive power of government. Here are some thoughts about the use of power:

“The sole advantage of power is that you can do more good.”

-- Baltasar Gracian

“Power is the capacity to translate intention into reality and sustain it.

-- Warren Bennis

“Being powerful is like being a lady – if you have to tell people you are, you aren't.”

-- Lady Margaret Thatcher
