Thursday Buzz

News Highlights

Utahns cast their delegate votes for John Kerry in a “Texas-sized sentence,” as reported in The Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret Morning News. Vice President Dick Cheney raises money for John Swallow and makes case that Bush needs Republican supporters in Congress in stories in Tribune and Morning News. Concern over the state school board nominating process flares in Utah County, as reported by the Morning News.

Quote of Day

“While the Deseret Morning News supports the rights of private property owners and employers to establish their own rules regarding guns on their property or places of work, we struggle to comprehend the rationale of Utah's laws that permit concealed weapon holders to carry guns in a number of public venues. Public opinion polls conducted over a number of years have consistently held that a majority of Utahns don't want concealed weapons in public schools and other public facilities.”

Notes from the Convention

Democratic National Convention delegate Carlos Vasquez is running for Utah State Treasurer. He is a member of the Teamsters Union, and is thought to be the first Teamster in state history to run for a statewide office.

Utah’s ABC Channel 4 and Chris Vanocur are winning big kudos from the Utahns in Boston for coverage of the Utah delegation. The other Utah stations did not send local reporters to the convention. Only two newspapers sent reporters, the Tribune (Dan Harrie) and the Morning News (Lisa Riley Roche).
