The Week Ahead

Utah delegates to the Republican National Convention will be packing their bags and heading to the Big Apple later this week. The convention starts one week from today. It will be a defining moment for the Bush campaign, and may determine the outcome of the presidential election. A major factor at the convention will be the hundreds of thousands of protesters who will try to disrupt the events and draw attention away from the speeches. It will be interesting to see how much play the major news media give the protesters.

Meanwhile, school starts this week for many Utah students. Summer vacations are mostly over, families will settle down, and politics will heat up. Check out the Agenda Utah political calendar for all the events. Over the next few weeks we'll likely see more candidates hitting the airwaves with paid media.

Indian summer is my favorite time of the year. Warm days and cool nights. Apples ripening on the tree. Football season getting underway. Every so often a nip in the air forecasting autumn days to come. Leaves turning colors in the high country. Anticipation of the hunting seasons (although I seem to never get out anymore). It's a great time of year.

Utahns Like Direction of State

Utahns are pretty happy, overall, with how things are going, which should be of some benefit to incumbents on Nov. 2. A new Dan Jones & Associates poll commissioned by the Exoro Group shows 58 percent of registered voters say Utah is on the right track, while 32 percent say it is on the wrong track. Ten percent didn't know.

The “right track-wrong track” question is frequently asked in political surveys to measure the general satisfaction of voters. In Utah, Republicans are predictably more satisfied than Democrats or independents. Some 73 percent of Republicans say Utah is on the right track, compared with only 33 percent of Democrats and 47 percent of independents. Only 13 percent of Republicans say Utah is on the wrong track, compared to 58 percent of Democrats and 42 percent of independents. Women are a little more optimistic about Utah 's direction than men; Young people 18-24 are significantly more optimistic than older people; optimism drops off among those with post-college education; and very active LDS are much more optimistic than respondents in other religious groups. Among the large counties, the most optimistic people live in Davis County and the least optimistic in Salt Lake County.
