Convention Odds & Ends

Best Local TV Coverage: Kudos to KTVX Channel 4 and Chris Vanocur for coverage of the convention. Channel 4 is the only local television news operation in attendance and Vanocur's reports have been lively and informative. Vanocur also covered the Democrats in Boston. Channel 4 has shown a strong commitment to political coverage.

Best National Coverage: National Journal. http://nationaljournal.com Access usually costs a lot of money, but during the convention week it's free. There's a ton of info there.

Report From the Scene

Alternate Delegate Mike Mower, who works for Provo Mayor Lewis Billings (also a delegate), told Agenda Utah Tuesday night that the Utah delegation enjoyed performing service at a Staten Island soup kitchen and also at the Salvation Army New York Temple. President Bush's sister, Dorothy "Doro" Bush Koch, stopped by and was very down-to-earth and approachable. She pitched right in with the work.

At Madison Square Garden, the Utah delegation is seated close to the press corps and were quick to notice Michael Moore among the reporters. “It made for a lively unscripted moment when John McCain challenged him as a propagandist for Saddam Hussein,” Mower said. Mower's 10-year-old daughter, Mallory, is attending the convention. “She's learning great lessons about the political process at the convention, and also about the First Amendment on the streets as we run into screaming, angry demonstrators.” The delegation bus had to circle the hotel area three times to avoid a mob of protestors.

Terminator Comes Through

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger delivered a terrific speech Tuesday night. Wired Magazine features a very interesting article analyzing his success and suggesting that he is a new breed of centrist politician with wide appeal.

National Journal Hotline Electoral Scoreboard: 274 for Bush, 231 for Kerry, 33 tied or disputed

Dogs, Investors, Back Bush; Economists Predict Bush Win

" According to the Presidential Dog Poll done by the AKC Rewards Visa Card from Bank One, dog owners trust Bush over Kerry (51%-37%) to walk their dog, and also believe Bush will make their dogs happier (44%-37%). No word from the cats.

" Gallup poll: Among investors, 41 percent say Bush will boost portfolios, compared to 36% for Kerry, while 21% say no difference.

" Most economists who have developed predictive models say Bush will win, according to a National Journal review.

They Said It

"I spend most of my time talking to the media. This can be a horrifying, gritty experience."

- Bush campaign spokesman Terry Holt, warning college-aged Republicans of the perils of a political career (National Journal Convention Alert)

Hispanic Republicans at the Gallivan Center

The Utah Republican Hispanic Assembly will host two booths at the Hispanic Fiesta Days celebration this Friday and Saturday at the Gallivan Center in Salt Lake City. The campaigns of Jon Huntsman Jr., Congressman Chris Cannon, Senator Bob Bennett, State Senator James Evans and potentially one or two more Republican candidates will share the booths.

The URHA is looking for volunteers to serve in two-hour blocks, staffing the booths and handing out campaign information. Those interested in helping should contact URHA secretary Arthuro Santana, thesantanas@msn.com, and indicate when they can help. Even an hour would help.

Communications Tip

Part 3 of a Series:
How to Deal With a Crisis

Tip 3: Instead of trying to cover up (see Tuesday s tip), do just the opposite. When something bad happens, whether it is your fault or not, get everything out on the table as quickly as possible. Don t overreact, but provide more information than would be expected. Provide names, dates, details, background and everything you know. As new developments occur and new information surfaces, get it out.

You can t be seen as hiding anything. Constituents or customers will appreciate the fact that you re being transparent and dealing forthrightly with the matter. Another reason to quickly release all information is that if the crisis isn t major, you might be able to confine the story to one or two news cycles instead of allowing the story to be strung out over several days or weeks as new facts are revealed.
