News Highlights

Utahns react to president’s speech and declare convention a success (Deseret Morning News and Salt Lake Tribune). Republican support for Nancy Workman wavers (Tribune). Tribune editorial encourages David Yocom to file charges quickly, while Morning News editorial says county shouldn’t pay people to work for other organizations. Workman wants fast adjudication (Morning News). City Council looks into Rocky Anderson’s use of city e-mail during campaign (Morning News).

Quote of the Day

"I don't know what's going to happen to (Nancy) Workman. Political history tells me she will either get out of her race, resign her office or lose the election. It's unlikely she can survive this and still be mayor come next January."

- Deseret Morning News Political Editor Bob Bernick, in a column putting perspective around the Workman situation

Friday Buzz
Compiled and Written by LaVarr Webb

As Utah delegates return home from New York, political pundits will be watching the polls to see if the Bush campaign gets any "bounce" out of the convention. By any measure, it had to be considered a successful convention for the Republicans. They were able to frame the election around national security concerns, while projecting an optimistic vision for the future and outlining an ambitious domestic agenda.

Utah delegates' expectations were met and exceeded. They loved the president's speech and the entire convention. "Every night has been electric," said delegate Todd Weiler, an attorney who is Davis County Republican chair.

Weiler said his family had a great time in New York, taking in three professional baseball games, two Broadway play, seeing the sights such as the Empire State Building, and dodging protestors. But the highlight was clearly the convention and speeches.

New Davis Demo Headquarters

Davis County Democratic leader Pat Herrera asked Agenda Utah to publish the location of the new Davis Democratic headquarters: 7 Crestwood Drive, Kaysville UT 84037. Phone: 801 544-9257.

Reader Feedback

A prominent national political reporter and editor from National Journal sent along this unsolicited comment about Agenda Utah: "I try to read several dozen state-centric publications/e-mails each day. I read yours religiously because it is one of the best organized (i.e., easy to navigate and find what I want), most useful and most interesting ones I receive. I especially appreciate the congressional delegation material and press clip roundup because they help me understand the state's political dynamics better."

Communications Tip

Part 5 of a Series:
How to Deal With a Crisis

Tip 5: When something bad happens, be sorry, be humble, apologize, vow to take corrective actions and outline what will be done. Don't minimize the blunder. We are forgiving people. Everyone messes up at one time or another. We empathize with people or institutions that make mistakes, immediately fess up and promise to do better. Someone who is arrogant, blames others, and refuses to take responsibility, only exacerbates the problem and encourages detractors and the news media to dig deeper and find further fault. After accepting full blame, lay out a course of action to correct the problem and move on. A little humility goes a long way in defusing a crisis.

Casual Friday

It's a gloomy day outside, which perfectly matches my mood given the big University of Utah win last night. I can't stand the thought of all those besotted U. fans celebrating. A Utah win always plunges me into deep despair. I'm not sure who I'd enjoy seeing lose more, John Kerry, or Utah. Oh, well, there's always hope for next week. But they play such a wimpy schedule this year. It's just a game, right?
