Standard-Examiner editorial says viewers will be looking for strong leadership and consistency. George Bush ahead in Utah 69-21%, according to new survey by Tribune. Quote of the Day

"We didn't catch a burglar, what we caught on the videotape was an unfaithful wife."

- Utah County Attorney Kay Bryson, commenting on allegations that he improperly installed videotaping equipment in the condominium of his estranged wife, Rep. Katherine Bryson (Salt Lake Tribune). See also Deseret Morning News story.

Who Will Win the Debate?

Big debate tonight, 7 p.m. John Kerry needs a win. George Bush just has to hold his own. If you want to tell us who you think the winner is, e-mail your comments and insights to daily@utahpolicy.com. We'll publish them Friday.

Please Mark Your Ballot

Actually, if new electronic voting equipment works as planned, it doesn't matter who wins the debate. Here's a little gallows humor from the Democrats.

Utah Policymaker Blog

We had a good response to our initial invitation to Utah policymakers to become bloggers. We have a couple dozen people signed up so far, including legislators, city leaders, county leaders and appointed officials. We'll be sending them instructions soon. We want more policymakers to participate, a good cross-section of local, state and federal leaders. To qualify, you need to be an elected official (at any level), or an appointed official at the policymaker level (city manager, department head, etc.). We're not going to be too strict. We've also invited a few other people like the chairs of the political parties.

We'll have the actual blog site up on the www.utahpolicy.com web site within a day or so and should be ready to post blogs by the first of next week. Remember, this is all brand new and experimental. We'll learn as we go along. We don't want the policymaker blog to be dominated by a few aggressive or loquacious politicians. We don't want it to be too shrill or right-wing or left-wing. We encourage spirited debate, but we want bloggers to be respectful of each other and stick to the issues. We do want policymakers to use the blog to promote their causes and priorities, to comment on things published in the news media, and to share their observations and insights. This policymaker blog can be a lot of fun and provide a valuable public service, or it can be a great idea that doesn't pan out. We'll find out. So send a message to daily@utahpolicy.com, if you're a policymaker and you want to participate.

Diverse Positions in Issues Guide

The Sutherland Institute has published an on-line Election Year Issues Guide. It contains 132 state policy questions, followed by responses from the Sutherland Institute and other individuals and groups. It's interesting to compare the Sutherland Institute's positions on some sensitive issues with the positions of the American Civil Liberties Union. Check it out at here. “Our goal with this Guide is to encourage a constructive, civil community dialogue,” said Sutherland President Paul T. Mero. “We hope you will embrace it in that spirit.” This guide is an excellent starting point for aspiring politicians who are developing their own positions on key issues.

Are Liberals More Vocal?

The Salt Lake Tribune doesn't get enough letters-to-the-editor from conservatives. In an editorial section column last Sunday, Public Forum editor Malin Foster veritably pleaded for more letters from conservatives. He acknowledged that the Tribune's letters section is lopsided and theorized that conservatives are less likely to be complaining sorts, while out-of-power liberals are more likely to be mad at the world. It might also have something to do with who's reading the two Salt Lake newspapers. The Deseret Morning News gets plenty of letters from conservatives. Anyway, all you conservatives out there, Foster really wants your letters. E-mail them to letters@sltrib.com.

Housekeeping: If you see articles in newspapers, magazines, web sites, blogs, etc., anywhere in the country that would be interesting to our readers in Utah, send along the links so we can share them. E-mail to: daily@utahpolicy.com.
