Quote of the Day

We could take a lesson from the mother eagle in David McNally's poem:

"The Eagle gently coaxed her offspring toward the edge of the nest. Her heart quivered with conflicting emotions as she felt their resistance to her persistent nudging.
"'Why does the thrill of soaring have to begin with the fear of falling?' She thought. This ageless question was still unanswered for her. . . . The Eagle drew courage from an innate wisdom. Until her children discovered their wings, there was no purpose in their lives. . . . Until they learned how to SOAR they would fail to understand the privilege it was to have been born an EAGLE . . . .
"The PUSH was the greatest gift she had to offer. IT WAS HER SUPREME ACT OF LOVE. So one by one she pushed them, and THEY FLEW!"
All students at UVSC are eagles. Let them soar.

-- John Florez in Deseret Morning News column about what UVSC students are learning from the Michael Moore controversy

The Week Ahead

With less than a month to go in the election, campaign intensity will pick up this week. The vice presidential debate between Dick Cheney and John Edwards is Tuesday at 7 p.m. The second presidential debate is Friday at 7 p.m. It is a crucial week in the Nancy Workman saga, with a preliminary hearing today on her legal troubles, and the Salt Lake County GOP Central Committee meeting Tuesday. If a write-in campaign is to occur, it must get going by the end of this week or it will be too late to mount a real effort. Check out the numerous political events on Utah calendar. Plenty of opportunities exist to meet candidates and hear debates. There’s no reason not to be well informed if you want to make intelligent choices on Nov. 2.

The Blog is Coming! The Blog is Coming!

Utah’s first-ever web log written by policymakers will debut within a few days. We have 25 intrepid elected and appointed officials who have volunteered to be bloggers. The blog is already located at www.utahpolicy.com. It currently has only the blog invitation posted, but we’ll replace the invitation with postings from policymakers soon. We’d like to have more bloggers. To qualify, you need to be an elected official, an appointed official at a policymaker level, or a top political party official. If interested, send an e-mail to daily@utahpolicy.com.

Presidential Election Status

If you want to follow the presidential election closely, check out http://www.electoral-vote.com. It is a very interesting site with an enormous amount of data and information. It was created by a John Kerry supporter, but it seems to be quite objective except for the humor page. The site uses the latest polling data to show current electoral vote status. A more pro-George Bush site to try is: www.electionprojection.com. That site also has a daily Election Projection (www.electionprojection.com/dailyprojections.html). Thanks to reader Randy (didn’t include his last name) for sending the link.
