Quote of the Day

"People don't have a lot of passion about things. They're having fun, doing their own thing."

-- Brian Cooper, a 23-year-old University of Utah sophomore, in a Salt Lake Tribune story comparing student attitudes about the war in Iraq with the anti-war protests during the Vietnam era 35 years ago.

Crazy Time in County Politics

It's highly likely that tonight Nancy Workman will withdraw from her re-election bid and Utahns will witness a fascinating and rare political event: a write-in campaign by a prominent candidate ( Ellis Ivory or Molonai Hola ) with less than a month to go in the race. With the right candidate who has money (or who can raise it) and with a Herculean effort by the county and state GOP grassroots organizations, the GOP still has a shot at winning. Democrat Peter Corroon's ideal scenario would be for to Workman stay in. Republicans will not rally around Merrill Cook . He's burned too many bridges.

Excellent Web Site

If you like to follow national politics, here's a terrific web site with an enormous amount of information: www.realclearpolitics.com . House Speaker Marty Stephens suggested it might be of interest to readers. It's one of his favorite sites.

Please send us the addresses of web sites, blogs, and articles from newspapers and magazines that you think might be of interest to Policy Daily readers, especially articles outside of Utah about Utahns or former Utahns.

View List of Policymaker Bloggers

Utah blogger Ray Matthews , who operates a specialized blog covering RSS in government, has been following our little foray into blogging. You can read his comments at www.rssgov.com .

Meanwhile, we have created a Policymaker Blog page at http://www.utahpolicy.com/pages/policymaker.htm . You can also get to the page by going to our home page, www.utahpolicy.com , and clicking on “policymaker” in the blue bar at the top. On the blog page you will find a list of the intrepid policymakers who are willing to give this blogging thing a try. A few more people have volunteered who don't quite fit the definition of policymaker, and we're evaluating their participation. You will soon be seeing postings from our policymaker bloggers.

Four Groups Join “YES on 3 Coalition”

Four groups supporting Amendment 3, which defines marriage as being between a man and a woman, are holding a press conference and dinner tonight at 5 p.m. to kick off the fall campaign in support of the amendment. The event will be held at the Miller Free Enterprise Center Atrium, 9750 South 300 West, Sandy.

The “YES ON 3 COALITION” consists of Utahns for a Better Tomorrow, The Constitutional Defense of Marriage Alliance, Yes for Marriage and the Traditional Marriage Crusade. Utah is one of 11 states set to vote in November on a traditional definition of marriage. Interested citizens are invited to attend the event. RSVP by sending an e-mail to: LL@freedomutah.com

Communications Tip

How to Get the Newsroom’s Attention

The bottom line is this: the news media are trying to sell a product to the public. In order to break into this marketplace of ideas and information, you have to sell your product—your story, your issue, your message—to the media. Here’s how to get the media’s attention and make the sale:

  • Make it Timely. Reporters look for stories that dovetail with current events or problems.
  • Make it Easy. Assignment editors look for the “easy hit” that won’t require a big investment of time or effort. Prior to an event, send interested reporters news clips or other background materials. Prepare an executive summary—i.e., provide a short summary of key findings right up front, along with recommendations or analysis.
  • Make it Multimedia. Cater your event to every medium. Television is visual; radio is aural; newspapers build stories around interesting people. Satisfy everyone.
  • Make it Local. Having a local angle can make or break a story. Know your local reporters; watch the local news; read the local papers. Saturate your story with state-, county- or city-level data.
  • Keep it Simple. There’s a useful axiom from the design profession: “Don’t have too many elements.”
  • Use “Real” People. Reporters like to interview “regular folks”—parents, kids and front-line workers. Politicians and officials get more “face time” with reporters, but the young mother with clingy children gets on television.
  • Have a Message, and Stick to It. Summarize and simplify your issue into a sound-bite length, easy-to-understand message, and then meticulously stick to it.
