Quote of the Day

"Private planes are expensive. The fuel is expensive. I have two jobs so I do charter planes sometimes on my own, and I know what they cost. But (UVSC officials) said they wanted me to come and they wanted to pay my travel. And I wanted to be there to meet the students."

- Sean Hannity commenting of the $50,000 cost of his travel expenses to speak at UVSC (Deseret Morning News).

The Blog

Thad Van Ry, city council member from Woods Cross, is the first person to post a blog on our new Utah Policymaker Blog . Wilf Sommerkorn, Davis County economic development director, was next. So it’s a start. We expect many more over the next few days. We’ve had requests to participate from several candidates and a few county party chairs, and we may invite them to participate as guest bloggers.

Presidential Debate Trivia

Oct. 21, 1984, nearly 20 years ago: In a debate with Walter Mondale, President Ronald Reagan pokes fun at the issue of his advanced age by saying:

“I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience.”

Business Recruitment Picking Up

I had occasion to chat with Chris Roybal, president and CEO of the Economic Development Corporation of Utah a few days ago. He said EDCU is receiving significantly more inquiries from businesses considering expanding or relocating to Utah than in the past few years. EDCU is working with a number of good prospects and may have some announcements in the near future. It’s a sign Utah’s economy is gaining steam.

JibJab

The latest animated political cartoon from the JibJab fellas is funny (although not as funny as This Land is Your Land), but a bit vulgar. Check it out.

Can Demos Take Over U.S. Senate?

Here’s Charlie Cook’s analysis on the chances of the Democrats taking control of the Senate from his Tuesday National Journal e-mail column.

“With three weeks until Election Day, eight races remain too close to call . . . and barring some unexpected event, these races will decide control of the Senate.

“Democrats carry the burden of holding five of these eight seats -- Sen. Tom Daschle in South Dakota and four of the five open seats in the South (Florida, Louisiana, North Carolina and South Carolina). Republicans are defending the other three seats -- appointed Sen. Lisa Murkowski in Alaska and the open seats in Colorado and Oklahoma.

“So What Does It All Mean? First, Democrats deserve credit for keeping their Southern seats in play. The South is fairly hostile territory for the party, especially in presidential years, and very early predictions ran heavily against Democrats being able to hold even a couple of these seats. Yet Democrats recruited the kind of moderate candidates who can win in such an environment. Today, only their open seat in Georgia is a lost cause.

“Still, winning control of the Senate is a tall, but not completely impossible, order. To win a majority, Democrats would need to win six of the eight seats if Kerry is elected, thus allowing Sen. John Edwards to cast tie-breaking votes. If the president is re-elected, Democrats would need to win seven of the eight seats. In short, Democrats have about a 30 percent chance of gaining a majority in November.”

Leadership Tip

Make a Decision!

(Source: “Common Sense Supervision” by Roger V. Fulton)

The worst decision is no decision. In order for a decision to be worthwhile, it must be sound and made in a timely fashion. The people above you have faith in your ability to make decisions or they would not have made you a supervisor.

However, as we all know, not all decisions are good decisions. But if they are based on the following process, they should never be bad decisions. When a decision must be made:

1. Gather all the facts you need to understand the situation.

2. Analyze the facts and review them objectively.

3. Formulate possible strategies and consider the consequences of each.

4. Choose the best one and make the decision to implement it.

Some decisions are made in ten seconds, some in days and some in months. However, they all are made the same way. If you can’t make a decision, or consistently make the wrong one, then being a supervisor is not for you and you should choose another career path.
