News Highlights

In separate articles, the New York Times highlights Paul Van Dam's Senate campaign and looks at the governor's race between Scott Matheson Jr. and Jon Huntsman Jr.

Peter Corroon, from obscurity to frontrunner in the Salt Lake County mayoral race is profiled (Salt Lake Tribune), while Merrill Cook is playing the abortion card to keep Ellis Ivory off the ballot (Deseret Morning News), and Ivory and the Salt Lake County Republicans are now 0-for-2 in their attempts to get Ivory certified (Morning News and Tribune).

The Tribune endorses Chris Cannon and the St. George Spectrum endorses Jim Matheson.

Quote of the Day

“While some of the church's critics have said it is trying to influence the vote on Amendment 3, many good Mormons may disagree. While the church supports the principle of heterosexual marriage and appears to oppose civil unions, it does not say -- and never has -- that virtually any measure ever proposed to protect marriage, no matter how flawed, should be supported. By all indications, the opposite is true. The church appears to expect its members to study the issues and vote for sound measures. Presumably, members are free to reject a marriage measure that is, in their opinion, legally flawed.”

Friday Buzz
Compiled and Written by LaVarr Webb

T.G.I.F.

Every campaign minute is precious right now so, sorry, candidates can't take the weekend off. Everyone else is permitted to take a long walk with the dog, watch some football, and get re-acquainted with the family. Have a good and relaxing weekend.

Legislators Post Blogs

Blogs from policymakers aren't exactly pouring into our Utah Policymaker Weblog, but we are getting new posts almost every day. Check it out at www.utahpolicy.com. A couple of Republicans legislators, Cheryl Allen and Mike Noel, have posted comments some of the election campaigns and other topics. Thanks for the contributions and we encourage other policymakers to comment on current issues and things of importance to them.

In Remembrance: Sheri Mower

Sheri Mower was a terrific lady. We mourn her passing and express our condolences to Mike Mower and his tough and brave four young children, ages 11-5. Sheri, a devoted wife, mother and church worker, and accomplished attorney and political activist, died last Monday at age 42 after a two-year battle with breast cancer. The last several months have been incredibly difficult for the entire family. Friends and observers have been amazed at the resilience of the Mower family.

Mike is one of the really good guys in politics. Though he is a devout Republican, Democrats think he's great. Through the ordeal he never lost his sense of humor. As late as several days ago Mike was gamely fielding media questions about Michael Moore in his role as a Utah Valley State College board member. He showed up for work in the Provo Mayor's Office whether or not he had been up all night with Sheri.

Provo City is accepting donations for Mike and his children to take a trip to Disneyland sometime in the near future. Call Gina, 801 852-6108, or make contributions to the Sheri Mower Memorial Account, Zions Bank Provo Region, Attn:  Kelly Ward, 111 N. 200 W. Provo , UT  84601.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Provo Sunset Stake Center, 1560 S. 1100 W., Provo. See Sheri's obituary here.
