News Highlights

Political news galore today. He’s on, he’s off. The latest on Ellis Ivory's ballot bid (Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret Morning News). Ivory profiled in Morning News.

Editorials: KSL endorses RAP, RAMP, and PAR ballot measures. Standard-Examiner opposes Amendment 3 and receives a visit from USU President Kermit Hall, pushing Amendment 2.

Salt Lake Mayor Rocky Anderson wants to bridge religious divide (Morning News and Tribune).

Utah Democrats sue national and Utah GOP 2nd District candidate John Swallow for "illegal coordination" (St. George Spectrum).

Quote of the Day

“One might think it bad form to ask the Republican Party to pay for ads trashing its own positions. Unless, of course, all that matters is getting a fellow Republican elected. If that's the case then, clearly, getting mud on one's own congressmen, senators, even one's own president, is mere collateral damage when the chance to smear a Democrat presents itself.”

-- Salt Lake Tribune editorial on the NRCC mailers targeting Jim Matheson.

Thursday Buzz
Compiled and Written by LaVarr Webb

Well, the World Series wasn't as close or exciting as the election, but at least Boston beat the curse. Let's hope the Massachusetts domination in baseball and football doesn't carry over into the presidential election.

Today : Amendment 3 debate on Doug Wright show on KSL Radio, 1160 AM, 10 a.m. Second Congressional District debate between Jim Matheson and John Swallow, 7 pm , KUED Channel 7.

White Knuckle Time
Advice to candidates: Emotions run high the last few days of the campaign. Now is the time to stay cool. Don't panic. Adapt as needed, respond to everything, but don't abandon your basic game plan. Keep things in perspective. Win or lose, it's not the end of the world. Don't say things in last few days you'll regret later. Remember that today's opponent may be tomorrow's ally. Don't get personal and mean. Don't burn bridges.

Polling Getting Harder
Pollster Dan Jones , who is as nervous this time of year as any candidate (which is what makes him a good pollster), says this election cycle has been harder to survey than any he's ever done. Part of it is that people are busy and don't want to be bothered. Part of it is cynicism about politics. Part of it is the many polls in the field, some of them very bad polls by candidates or interest groups. Part of it is the proliferation of cell phones as primary telephones. It all adds up to difficulty in drawing accurate samples. Jones works until he gets it right, but it's becoming harder and harder. Results of Jones' final survey before election day will appear this weekend in the Deseret Morning News and on KSL TV.

Guest Editorial

Vote Yes on Amendment 2

By Jeff Edwards, vice president,
Economic Development Corporation of Utah

In the upcoming election on Nov. 2, voters are being asked to approve a change to Utah's constitution that would allow the state to reap the economic benefits of research done at our major research universities. Known as Amendment 2, this change would allow the state's two largest schools, University of Utah and Utah State University, to receive equity in exchange for the rights to use technology developed in Utah institutions. This practice has been used in other states for many years, and has served as a catalyst for the development of strong tech-based business communities in North Carolina, Pennsylvania and elsewhere.

Although there has been no organized opposition to this proposal, supporters are concerned that voters who are not informed about the proposal will vote against it out of hand.

I urge you to support this change by voting for the amendment, and to inform others about it as well. I would be happy to respond to questions or comments on this issue.

A detailed explanation of the proposal and its implications is available in the official voter information pamphlet, which can be viewed electronically by following this link to the State of Utah Election Office. I am also attaching a link to a recent editorial on KSL in favor of Amendment 2.

Reader Response

Someone Even Gave Us Hot Chocolate

“You're right about the Honk & Waves. How humiliating.  However, it is good for polling. At our last Honk & Wave, we had about 40 to 50 honks, and only 5 obscene gestures!”

-- E-mail message from Peter Corroon , candidate for County Mayor, responding to a recent Policy Daily item about the relative value of honk-and-waves.
