News Highlights

Who’s going to win? Read predictions by Political Editor Bob Bernick (Deseret Morning News)

Utah Supreme Court puts Ellis Ivory back on the ballot (Salt Lake Tribune and Morning News). Tribune editorial calls it swift justice.

Tribune says the mudslinging in the 2nd District race is working, while the Morning News wonders if it will provoke a backlash. John Swallow and GOP release new ads attacking Jim Matheson for supporting GOP bill (Morning News).

Scott Matheson denounces phantom enviro group's attacks on rival Jon Huntsman (Tribune).

Quote of the Day

“Forget ghosts and goblins - want to be something really terrifying for Halloween? Wear a rubber mask of President Bush, sure to send shivers down the spines of your left-leaning friends. Or frighten the Republicans in your life with a latex mug of Bush's Democratic challenger, John Kerry.”

-- Story about political Halloween masks (Salt Lake Tribune). Bush masks, by the way, outsell Kerry masks.

Friday Buzz
Compiled and Written by LaVarr Webb

Scary Weekend Ahead
It would be a scary weekend even without Halloween. All those candidates doing honk-and-waves. All those campaign workers doing literature drops door-to-door. All those automated phone calls clogging up the phone lines. And all those final campaign ads flooding the airwaves. Might be good to just stay in bed. Speaking of bed, we do get an extra hour of sleep with the end of Daylight Savings Time. Here's an idea: Have the neighbor kids distribute campaign literature as they trick-or-treat.

Presidential Poll Watch
I've given up trying to follow the national polls on the presidential races. It's just too close with too much conflicting data, and too many variables exist for me to have a lot of confidence in them. But if you must have the latest information, the best site to get it is www.realclearpolitics.com . The site follows all the polls, including those in the swing states, and always seem to be up-to-date.

Field Report From Peter Corroon, the King of Honk and Waves
“Latest Honk & Wave Poll from South Jordan :  About 30 Honks, one middle finger, two peace signs, one three finger ("I'm voting for W"? or "Read between the lines"?) -Peter ;)”

He's On, He's Off, He's On
All of the maneuvering to keep Ellis Ivory on or off the ballot has been high political drama, but it has also been good for his campaign. His name has been in the front page headlines and leading the newscasts for several days running now. He's become an instant household name. He doesn't control the publicity over the legal maneuverings, but he has complemented it with enough advertising messaging that it all comes out pretty positive for him. And now he's on the ballot, representing the Republican Party. It's one of the more remarkable chapters in Utah political history, and a win creates a storybook ending. If he loses, it's just an interesting footnote.

Leadership Tip

Acknowledge Good Work With Praise
Don't praise just to praise, but let your employees know you care and that you noticed their efforts. The thought that a person works for money alone has been disproved by innumerable researchers. The most satisfying reason for a person to work is that it makes that person feel worthwhile and that he/she is making a contribution to some larger effort. Recognition of a worker's personal efforts will pay dividends a thousand times to you and to the organization.
