Quote of the Day

"We will build this project; there's no question in my mind. The need is too great, the support it too universal, the project is too good. . ."

-- UDOT Director John Njord, defending the Legacy Parkway against Sierra Club opposition (Deseret Morning News)

Mike Leavitt and Homeland Security

What are the chances of Mike Leavitt taking over Homeland Security? Here’s what one Washington insider had to say:

“If you look at it from the President’s perspective, you have someone at EPA who is doing a fantastic job.  That person has your trust and confidence and no one is complaining loudly at that person’s performance.  EPA Administrator is one of the toughest jobs in Washington to fill.  So, having said that, I think that Leavitt stays in his current position.  But, stay tuned, because our information is that he is one of three people under consideration for the DHS job along with Asa Hutchison, the Undersecretary for Border and Transportation Security, and White House homeland security adviser Frances Townsend.”

Reader Response
Enough of Dan Rather

Here’s a response from Del Draper to my Tuesday comments on bloggers getting involved in the Daschle-Thune race:

“I think that a better example of the work of bloggers than the Dan Rather incident cited so frequently is the quick response to the Cheney/ Edwards debate. After the Vice President said “ I have presided over the Senate for the past two years and tonight, Mr Edwards, is the first time I have ever met you in person,” it was only a matter of hours before several bloggers had uncovered pictures of Edwards and Cheney seated side by side at several events. Enough of the Dan Rather story.  I enjoy your column and the service.”

New EDCU Leader

Congratulations to Jeff Edwards, who has been named interim president and CEO of the Economic Development Corporation of Utah. He replaces Chris Roybal, who has joined the Huntsman administration as economic development advisor. Edwards has been with EDCUTAH for more than three years as vice president of client services, which is responsible for recruiting new businesses to Utah by working with corporations and site consultants across the United States.  The client services team also conducts economic research and analyses, and provides assistance to existing Utah businesses with expansion and financing resources. Edwards has a background of marketing and communications in the high-tech industry and has also been involved in political campaigns and events for many years. Jeff is a good guy and capable administrator and will do a terrific job for EDCUTAH.

Campaign Finance Reform

"[T]he entire concept of driving money out of politics is itself ridiculous. Money, like water in a flood plain, will always find its level in the politics of a free country. One might as well try to ban the air we breathe as to proscribe the spending of campaign money. ... What we need is less legislation and fewer artificial limits on political speech, and more transparency that would enable us to see exactly who is financing what. The reforms that gave us the 527s, such as previous ones that gave us the PACs, wind up doing just the opposite." --Jonathan Tobin (Source: The Federalist Patriot)

Late Night Humor, Dec 1:

Leno:

•  Yesterday the Director of Homeland Security, Tom Ridge, resigned. He’s taking an even more important job — he’s going to be protecting NBA fans from the Indiana Pacers.

•  Tom Ridge told friends he wants to go to the private sector where he can make some more money. Finally a Republican acting like a Republican. Never mind that crap about spending more time with his family. He’s sick of the colors red and blue, he wants to see some green.

•  NAACP President Kweisi Mfume announced that he is stepping down as the head of the NAACP. President Bush issued a statement — he said "that just shows how great our country is, when a black man can become head of the NAACP.”

•  And you can tell the Republicans have taken over — his replacement is Trent Lott.

•  How many people still have turkey leftover? I still got mine. You know I leave the turkey carcasses in the refrigerator until Christmas Eve. I wait until it gets that nice coat of green fuzz all around it and then I give it out as a Chia Pet.

Letterman

•  It’s an exciting time to be in New York City. The holidays are great here. Over the lunch hour I took a walk over to Rockefeller Center to see the Christmas tree. It’s like 400 feet tall and covered with thousands of lights, it’s just wonderful with the lights and the artificial snow – then I got closer and realized that’s just pigeon crap.

•  Earlier tonight Tom Brokaw retired after 21 years on NBC. We’ll miss Tom. As you know Paul and I both worked at NBC. Tom left NBC with honors and I left with a restraining order.
