Will Mitt Romney’s Religious Beliefs Hurt His
Presidential Run?
Pollster
David Hill
writes that Mitt
Romney is going to have trouble in the South
because of his Mormon faith. (For full article, click here.) Hill’s commentary in The Hill, a newspaper
covering Congress, ends this way:
“In
any event, the photogenic Romney’s nonsmoking, nondrinking, non-cursing
persona will win an audience with Christian conservatives. How he handles
that encounter will make or break his candidacy.”
Utah Bloggers Quoted
Utah
bloggers Phil Windley
and Dave Fletcher
are quoted in a very lengthy and interesting story on the impact of
blogging on government and politics published in Public
CIO.
Reader Response:
Rep. Urquhart on Egos and Burning Bridges
Rep.
Stephen
Urquhart, one of our busiest legislators who
still finds time to post interesting comments on legislative issues on his
own blog (www.steveu.com)
was nice enough to send in the following comments to Utah Policy Daily:
“As
always, your political tip ‘Don't Burn Bridges’ was on the money, except
for the observation that, ‘Politics attracts big egos that are sensitive
and easily bruised.’ I resent that and, quite possibly, might never get
over it.
“Your
advice is timely, especially in light of recent headlines that the Governor
and Legislature are at odds over budget disagreements. Both sides realize
how the process works. I have full confidence the Governor will realize
that the House is right in all things. Should he and the Senate fail to
reach that enlightened conclusion, I still have full confidence that the
process again will work this year. Neither branch and neither house will
get everything it wants, but we'll reach conclusions that fit the will of
most Utahns. To the extent we fail to do that in some areas, we'll hear
about it, and we'll try to get it right next year.
“Things
do get tense up here. It matters a great deal to the people that we figure
out ways to move the State forward. To do that, as you point out, we need
to stay calm. Despite the new quarters and new personnel in leadership
positions, I think we're keeping it together fairly well and will meet the
challenge to effectively address the huge issues that confront us.”
