News Highlights

Despite bipartisan opposition, Pentagon to move forward with study on bid to ship chemical weapons from Colorado to Utah (Salt Lake Tribune )

Bankruptcy reform legislation, condemned as "classism" by opponents, likely to pass House; would impact hardest in Utah, which has highest numbers of bankruptcies per household in the nation (Deseret Morning News)

Utah education leaders say federal concessions on NCLB still fall short, but Tim Bridgewater, Huntsman education deputy, says such criticisms are "untimely and miss the point" (Tribune)

Quote of the Day

"Clearly, U.S. immigration policy is broken. And all Americans in this post 9-11 world should be concerned about the possibility of terrorists filtering through our porous borders, along with others who are genuinely in search of better lives. But, tougher enforcement alone, especially by untrained civilians, is not the answer. What is needed, in KSL’s view, is a rational approach to the illegal immigration crisis, not rhetorical responses that do little more than inflame emotions and forestall solutions. For the long term, Congressman Cannon, not the vigilantes, is on the right track."

-- KSL editorial on Chris Cannon-sponsored legislation that would create guest-worker status for farm workers in the country illegally.

SL County GOP Update

An interesting matchup is looming in the race for Salt Lake County GOP chair. Among those who are running so far, former Sen. James Evans and former County Council member Steve Harmsen are considered mainstream candidates. Mike Ridgway is a perennial dissident who has challenged party leaders and has been kicked off the Central Committee. Pat Reagan is the fourth candidate. Milton Witt is seeking the vice chairmanship; Scott Vranes is seeking re-election as treasurer; and Patti Florence wants to be secretary. April 22 is deadline to file for a county party position. April 30 is the organizing convention at South Towne Expo Center.

UITA Goals for the Year

The Utah Information Technology Association, under the leadership of President and CEO Richard Nelson and new Chairman Jack Sunderlage, has announced its priorities for the coming year in a press release. Among the priorities is the STAR Economic Development Initiative, which is aimed at increasing funding for basic research and development at Utah’s two research universities.

Marketing and Blogs

Edelman and Intelliseek have produced a very informative white paper that is intended to inform marketing and communications professionals about how blogs work, and how they are affected by them.

The Internet is a valuable source of information, used by millions of people. To get information about a company, people can go to an official company website, or go to a blog. A lot of people would actually prefer to get their information from a blog than the official website, because the blog is written by people just like them.

A blog is an Internet site that creates a diary-like web page which enables users to post opinions on the internet. It is estimated that there will be 10 million U.S blogs by the end of 2005, and possibly even 35 million worldwide. Blogs cover a variety of information, from politics to music, to marketing. People who post on blogs want to be heard, and they are. Anyone with an opinion and Internet access can find, or create a blog to get their message out. This is forcing marketing professionals and company stake holders to think differently about how they go to market. The fact is that blogging is going to stick around and grow. Businesses need to grasp the importance of this and learn how to use blogging to their best interest.

Really Bad Political Joke (Submitted by a devout Democrat)

A Marine squad was marching north of Basra when the troops came upon an insurgent soldier badly injured and unconscious. Nearby, on the opposite side of the road, was an American Marine in a similar but less serious state. The Marine was conscious and alert.

As first aid was given to both men, the Marine was asked what had happened.

The Marine reported, "I was heavily armed and moving north along the highway and coming south was a heavily armed insurgent. Seeing each other we both took cover."

"What happened then?"

"I yelled to him that Saddam Hussein was a miserable low-life scumbag, and he yelled back that Teddy Kennedy is a rich, good-for-nothing fat drunk."

"We were standing there shaking hands when a truck hit us."
