Reach Utah Opinion Leaders

Utah Policy Daily offers businesses, associations, and other entities involved in public policy a unique opportunity to reach a very attractive audience – some 9,000 Utah elected officials (including many legislators), opinion leaders, business leaders and political activists. Consider this: You can reach this audience directly, at reasonable cost, without having your messages filtered by reporters or the news media. You can get the buzz going; build your visibility in the political community; advocate your cause with policymakers.

Because advertising real estate is quite limited on UPD, we have offered exclusive arrangements so messages don’t compete with others in the same policy area. Messaging can take the form of Web advertising, advocacy essay (like an op-ed piece), press release, or on-going sponsorship of a particular UPD feature. For more info, call or e-mail Mark at 801.502.9134, mark@utahpolicy.com.

Quote of the Day

''People might read that [resolution] and say, 'Kay Briggs thinks all women should stay home and make strawberry jam' or that I'm totally against people raising a family in whatever situation gives them the most comfort and solace. I didn't read that into it, and I'm not opposed to discussing it.''

-- North Salt Lake Mayor Kay Briggs, discussing a resolution submitted by the Sutherland Institute sanctioning the “natural family as the fundamental unit of society” (Tribune) See also Morning News story.

Have a great Thanksgiving

Grateful people are happy people. There ought to be many happy people among us, because we have much to be thankful for. Here’s a Thanksgiving quiz from the Federalist Patriot, a conservative Web publishing group, and the story of Thanksgiving from the same publisher.

Utah Policy Daily will take Thanksgiving day off and will publish a streamlined version of UPD on Friday.

What Utah Democrats are Thinking

The Utah Democratic Party has published a new newsletter with a nice Thanksgiving message from chair Wayne Holland and a lot of moaning about Republican budget cuts.

Rep. Christensen Pens Winning Paper

Last June, the Sutherland Institute issued a Call for Papers focusing on last paragraph of the LDS Church's "The Family: A Proclamation to the World". It recently awarded $1,000 cash rewards to five people in five categories, including Rep. LaVar Christensen for his paper, "Stone Tablets, a Golden Calf, and 'What God Hath Joined Together'". (Check out the other winners).

Washington Watch

Rep. Jim Matheson condemns passage of Congressional pay raise (see press release), praises funding provided in military appropriations bill for construction of new veterans nursing homes (see press release)... Rep. Chris Cannon praises adoption of bill that includes $27 million for Utah infrastructure projects (see press release).

National Politics

Budget Impasse

National Journal.com’s Stan Collender says says the federal budget debate has reached such an impasse that not much will be done before the 2008 presidential election.

Blog Watch

On the Senate Site blog, Sen. Curtis Bramble shares his reasoning behind running a reporter shield law that provides protections to reporters and their confidential sources... Green Jello and Casserole Bar respond to Tribune story on declining diversity at U of U... Casserole Bar also has interesting post on oversensitivity when politics and religion intersect (Hat Tip: SLCSpin)... Carrie Ulrich at Democracy for Utah posts third step of eight from pamphlet, "Ways to Become Involved with the Utah Democratic Party," and points to nugget in Tribune story where former Pres. Jimmy Carter expresses solidarity with Utah Mormons... At New West, Kimberly Carlson has a long post on Utah's food tax debate... Wilf Sommerkorn has long post comparing Utah favorably to Oregon on planning issues... SLCSpin accuses Utah Democratic Chair Wayne Holland of employing fuzzy math... Guest editorial by Steve Huntsman at Weber County Forum bemoans schism between old and young in Ogden... National blog Western Democrat says Rep. Jim Matheson's poll numbers prove Democrats can be successful "even in Utah"... The national Yellow Dog Blog says it's time for the Blue Dog Democrats (of which Matheson is a member) to disband. ... Finally, in some sad news: The world's ugliest blogger, Sam, has passed away.

Meat Saves Lives

All of you vegetarians and animal rights activists out there, read the following from the Wall Street Journal’s James Taranto in his Best of the Web column:

“Meat saves lives . . . as the Chicago Tribune reports....

“Mark Copsy saw the smoke inside the car, and watched as the vehicle careened into a curb in Northlake on Sunday afternoon. It took him only a moment to realize the horror--the car was on fire, and there were people inside. Copsy and his 12-year-old son ran the half-block to help.

“When they got to the car, Copsy, 42, said he couldn't open the door. Inside, he could see an elderly man in the driver's seat. A female passenger sat next to him, her face white. He tried to smash the glass with his foot, but couldn't do it. In his hands, he held a 20-pound frozen Norbest turkey he and his son had just bought for Thanksgiving.

"I said, 'Hell, I'll just use the damn turkey.' And that's what I did," Copsy said. He yelled for the driver to cover his face, and used the turkey to smash out three windows.

“Just try doing that with tofu!”
