Thursday Buzz
Written by LaVarr Webb & Associates

If I Tell You, I Have to Kill You

As an obsessive chronicler of all things political, I am constrained to mention that a motley gang of shady politicians, sketchy news media types, roguish lobbyists, rascals of commerce, and various other has-beens (my category), wannabes, and ne’er-do-wells gathered Thursday at Lamb’s to resurrect the venerable Lunch in Honor of the Season. I can’t say who was there or what was said, because this is a family journal of delicate sensibilities and, anyway, the entire sordid affair was off the record. But I can confirm that the banter was bawdy, the gags were gross, the roasts were rude, and the tales were tasteless. In other words, a great time was had by all. (Psst … Want an invitation next year? See Horiuchi.)  Go Cougars!

National Politics

Tough Year Ahead

Excellent National Journal cover story on GOP prospects going into the 2006 election year.

Christmas Card of the Year

Sen. Orrin Hatch is the clear winner of the political Christmas card of the year sweepstakes. If you were on his list you got a card showing seven family photos, a big photo of Hatch with President and Laura Bush, and on the inside of the card the words and music to a song he wrote, “Round the Old Upright Piano.” Inserted in the card is a DVD movie, “A More Perfect Union,” which Hatch describes in a note as a movie that portrays the events surrounding the founding of America. Can anyone beat that Christmas card?
