2006 Legislative Directories

The Exoro Group has published an updated version of the popular Legislative Guide, complete with color photos of all lawmakers and a lot of other legislative info. Thanks to great sponsors and advertisers, the guides are free. You may pick up one or a handful at Exoro offices (47 W. 200 S. SLC, American Plaza III Suite 105), or at the Capitol at House and Senate offices.

Transportation Watch

Every Wednesday we feature a transportation section within Utah Policy Daily. We publish articles on crucial transportation issues and provide links to all the transportation stories published in the news media. Check it out each Wednesday.

The Future is the Past

Sometimes to go forward you have to retreat. We’re listening to readers, and more than half of our readers tell us they don’t like the simple notification that UPD has been posted. So beginning Monday we’re going to deliver the entire HTML newsletter via e-mail once again. We will, however, be publishing some features only on the Web, but we’ll provide links from the newsletter.

Legislators: Complete Your Profile

We received a flurry of legislative profiles shortly after we sent out our survey, but now we’re running out. Any legislator who wants to participate, should send us the completed survey ASAP. You can request a copy by e-mailing daily@utahpolicy.com

Quote of the Day

“The lesson in all this is that, regardless of how much money is available, tax reform is not an easy task. Utah's lawmakers deserve a lot of credit for their determination to make it happen in times of plenty. Doing it right, however, will require a lot of work and a lot of good leadership.”

-- Morning News editorial lauds lawmakers for taking on tax reform, but says the hard work is still ahead.

House GOP Plans Media Briefings

During the 45-day legislative session starting Monday, House Republican leaders will meet with the news media twice a week, every Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 12:20 p.m. in the House Lounge.

Fowlke On Board With USTAR

Rep. Lorie Fowlke has published another newsletter for her constituents (not yet posted on her Web site). In it she addresses a variety of issues, including transportation projects, school choice and tax cuts. She congratulates Larry Miller for declining to show “Brokeback Mountain” in his Jordan Commons movie theaters. Fowlke also said she supports the USTAR economic development initiative:

“Specifically, in the area of economic development, I support USTAR, (Utah Science, Technology and Research (USTAR) economic development initiative), developed by a coalition of business and education leaders and executives who have teamed up to create an atmosphere conducive to entrepreneurial opportunities. The gist of the plan is to use the state's research university's knowledge base to create new technologies that will spin off into private companies. The purpose is to create, not just more jobs, but well-paying jobs in which an individual can support a family.”

Podcast Watch

The latest edition of Jennifer Napier-Pearce’s Inside Utah.com Podcast features State Rep.
