Why United Way of Salt Lake

Is Involved in Public Policy

United Way of Salt Lake (UWSL) believes that sustained changes in social conditions require broadened strategies and increased involvement from many individuals and community organizations.

To address community needs at their core UWSL has taken a proactive approach to public policy, working with business and community leaders and the broader community to develop and implement long-term solutions. Our goal is to influence policy and spending priorities on the basis of the broad impact they will have for change.

UWSL recognizes the critical role government leaders serve in mobilizing resources around priority issues that can improve lives. Nonetheless, government cannot achieve these changes alone. Together, however, we can shape decisions and influence outcomes that can change the very conditions giving rise to our social problems. Together we can change lives.

During the 2008 legislative session, UWSL hopes to draw attention and support to legislation that will achieve positive outcomes in four key public policy areas:

1. Improving Financial Stability
2. Opening Doors to Educational Achievement
3. Building Cohesive Communities
4. Establishing a Framework for Healthcare Reform

To learn more about our legislative priorities within each of these four areas, please read our Impact Matters article in this newsletter or see our Legislative Priorites page online for greater detail.
