COMMUNITY MATTERS

Report to the Community Released
at 2008 Celebration of Service

It is time, once again, to make our annual report to the community. As we contemplate the successes of the past year, it is more than awe-inspiring to consider the many individuals and groups within our community that devote their time, talents and resources to help propel us toward our community’s goals, which is to create lasting, permanent changes in people’s lives so that problems are prevented from happening in the first place.

We are deeply appreciative to all who have caught the vision of our community action plan.Creating long-lasting social change requires everyone in the community working together. We all win when a child succeeds in school, when a family becomes financially stable, and when people have access to good health benefits.

As we look back over the past year, we feel a strong desire to report to you regarding our successes and our strategies for the future. During the past year we have convened 130 of the top minds in Utah to create the Financial Stability Council. We also organized four Community Change Councils to oversee the success of United Way of Salt Lake’s objectives. United Way of Salt Lake advocates helped create positive change as they effectively influenced the outcome of key legislation in 2008.

The Synergy Summit opened dialogue to discuss the importance of immigrant integration and strategies for success. Building on Common Ground: A Framework for Immigrant Integration was released that proposed comprehensive solutions for immigrant integration.

Successful efforts continued with Utah Saves as the number of Savers grew to 6,000 saving over $700,000 per month. The Earn it Keep it Save it initiative helped put $23 million into the local economy through helping people claim the Earned Income Tax Credit.

For a full report of the many achievements we have accomplished together, read the 2008 Report to the Community. Your support of United Way of Salt Lake is very much appreciated. We are grateful for the trust you have placed in us. Thank you for caring about the future of our community.

We also wish to recognize the following individuals and organizations that have demonstrated exceptional commitment and made a significant difference in our community:

• Outstanding Partner for Community Change: Dental Select

• Corporate Partner of the Year: Mark Miller Dealerships and The Mark and Kathie Miller Foundation

• President’s Award for Excellence: Lane Summerhays, president and CEO, Workers Compensation Fund

We are pleased to congratulate our award winners that were presented at the 2008 Celebration of Service luncheon. Our Celebration of Service event would not be possible without the support of American Express, our event sponsor. We also extend our thanks to Bonneville International for the production of the Celebration of Service awards video presentation, and to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for printing the Celebration of Service invitation and program.

Again, we are grateful for the trust you have placed in us. Thank you for caring about the future of our community. Please read the Impact Matters column in this newsletter for more information about our Celebration of Service award recipients.
