COMMUNITY MATTERS

A Strong Spirit of Volunteerism

Utah has long been a shining example of the spirit of volunteerism. Almost half of the adults in Utah volunteer their time, compared with a national average of about 26 percent. Utahns want to feel involved in their community and are willing to work hard to make it a better place for everyone. Volunteerism is all about recognizing a need and filling it, and our community is full of opportunities to lend a hand on behalf of others.

Each year, United Way of Salt Lake’s Day of Caring brings a tremendous outpouring of volunteerism and service in our community. This year is no different. In fact, Day of Caring 2007 is set to be the biggest ever as we celebrate the 15th Anniversary of our annual Day of Caring on September 6.

Our 15th Anniversary Day of Caring will bring together 2,800 volunteers representing nearly 100 local companies. We are thrilled to have received such an unprecedented response to our call for volunteers! This group of dedicated volunteers will complete one-day service projects for agencies that serve some of our community’s most vulnerable citizens. More than 60 agencies, schools and other organizations in Davis, Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele counties are working together with United Way of Salt Lake to accomplish this huge volunteer effort.

United Way Day of Caring volunteers make a big difference for local nonprofit organizations and schools. Volunteers expend some serious elbow grease as they clean and paint buildings, landscape and beautify grounds, educate and entertain children, and otherwise serve the most vulnerable people in our community.

We extend a heartfelt thanks to all those who contribute to United Way of Salt Lake and make their time and resources available for our Day of Caring, including the local nonprofit organizations and schools that work to make our community stronger, committed corporations and other organizations, and the thousands of volunteers who will dedicate part of their day on Thursday to make a real difference in the community.

United Way of Salt Lake Day of Caring is a huge effort on the part of so many. But volunteers work every day to make our community brighter.
