Why United Way
of Salt Lake Is Involved
in Public Policy
United Way of Salt Lake (UWSL) believes that sustained changes in social conditions require broadened strategies and increased involvement from many individuals and community organizations.

To address community needs at their core UWSL has taken a proactive approach to public policy, working with business and community leaders and the broader community to develop and implement long-term solutions. Our goal is to influence policy and spending priorities on the basis of the broad impact they will have for change.

UWSL recognizes the critical role government leaders serve in mobilizing resources around priority issues that can improve lives. Nonetheless, government cannot achieve these changes alone. Together, however, we can shape decisions and influence outcomes that can change the very conditions giving rise to our social problems. Together we can change lives.(Read the full article)

IMPACT MATTERS

United Way of Salt Lake’s 2008 Legislative Priorities


Together with non-profit, community and business leaders, UWSL has identified several public policy priorities in four key areas, which we believe can dramatically improve the lives of all in our state.

  1. Improving Financial Stability

  2. Our middle class is being stretched thin, and more families are living paycheck to paycheck. We recommend expanding financial literacy education in schools to help children and young adults understand how to manage their money and save for the future. To encourage more families to build assets and savings we support increased funding for Earned Income Tax Credit outreach and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, Individual Development Accounts, and affordable housing.
