New Report Demonstrates that Utahns Still Struggle with Financial Instability

We’ve talked a lot about financial stability in this space over the past several months—and for good reason. For three straight years (2002-2004) Utah ranked first in the nation for the number of personal bankruptcy filings. Last year, Utah had one filing per 208.2 households. This year it’s one filing per 167.4 households—and our filing rate still far exceeds the national average, despite having the hottest economy in the nation. IMPACT MATTERS

United Way of America to Invest $1.5 Billion in New Financial Stability Partnership

United Way of America recently launched its national United Way Financial Stability Partnership™, a nationwide initiative designed to help low-to-moderate-income individuals and families achieve financial stability, and announced it will invest $1.5 billion in the partnership over the next five years.

The partnership, which entails the active participation of Fortune 500 businesses, nonprofit organizations, federal agencies and local United Ways, will provide critical economic and educational support programs and resources to help families increase their income, build their savings and effectively manage their finances. Millions of Americans desperately need the support and skills to achieve and sustain financial independence. Over 20 million working adults still live below the poverty level despite the fact that many hold down multiple jobs. Meanwhile, the personal savings rate is the lowest in almost 75 years—in fact, the national savings rate is now at a negative one percent. (Read the full article)
