Day of Caring – Making an Impact in Our Community

Nearly 3,000 people will converge this Thursday as United Way of Salt Lake commemorates the 15th Anniversary of Day of Caring, a day of extraordinary commitment, caring and compassion. United Way of Salt Lake Board Members and staff along with local corporations and thousands of their employees will gather to celebrate the spirit of volunteerism in our community.

Approximately 2,800 volunteers representing 97 dedicated companies throughout the area will travel to 113 different service projects for 61 local agencies, schools and other organizations serving our community. Service projects will take place in all four counties in our service area (Davis, Salt Lake, Summit, and Tooele), and range from landscaping and painting to hosting a preschool party.

As we began preparing for our 15th Anniversary Day of Caring, we wanted to give everyone in the community a chance to get involved. So, new this year is a lunchtime service project open to the general public. The project will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at The Gateway. No need to call or register! Just stop by for a few minutes during your lunch hour to help put together oral hygiene kits. Local children in at-risk schools will be given these kits by the Sealants for Smiles Foundation, which provides preventative dental care, screening and education to school children. Come join the fun, stay as long as you like and help make a difference for some of our most vulnerable school children.

Throughout the United Way Day of Caring, a host of volunteers will work to make our community stronger. The meaning and value of this phenomenal volunteer effort is best summed up by Neighborhood House Executive Director, Jacob Brace: “United Way, corporations and nonprofits coming together always equals phenomenal outcomes to improve our community service. Hats off to the volunteers, organizations, clients and all those that make this day possible!”

We would like to especially thank our 15th Anniversary United Way Day of Caring sponsors: Ballard Medical Products, Bonneville International, CHG Healthcare Services, Inc., General Growth Properties, Hexcel Corp., and Tesoro Refining and Marketing Company. These sponsoring companies are also participating in United Way of Salt Lake Day of Caring, and their projects are a good sample of the kind of volunteer work that will be completed that day:
  • The employees of Ballard Medical will converge at the Salt Lake CAP Head Start to paint, clean toys, clean and repair the playground, clean the parking lot, and fill flower bed with bark.
  • Staff from Bonneville International will help the Boys and Girls Club in Murray by cleaning and painting several rooms and organizing art cupboards, the teen kitchen, janitorial closet and the storage area.
  • At the Neighborhood House, employees from CHG Healthcare Services will stain and fill planter boxes with soil and fall flowers, clean windows, clean up the landscape and join in social activities with seniors.
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters is partnering with General Growth Properties and Sprint to put on “Big for A Day,” an activity in which 50 volunteers will be matched with children from Washington Elementary for a trip to Discovery Gateway.
  • Hexcel will be arriving at The Children's Center in Kearns to clean the facility and grounds. They will also host a children's party with activities to entertain 70 preschool-aged children.
  • Tesoro employees are headed up to Camp Kostopulos to paint and repair buildings, clean up the grounds and landscape the area.
A big thanks to everyone involved in the 15th Anniversary of United Way of Salt Lake Day of Caring. We’ll see you Thursday!
