IMPACT MATTERS
Hope for the Holidays
Now that Halloween has come and gone, the holidays are just around the
corner. Families that are in need of gift assistance for the holidays can’t
wait for snowy winter days before signing up for aid. The Salvation Army is
currently accepting applications for holiday gift assistance, and the
deadline to apply is November 17.
Now is the time for families to sign up. United Way of Salt Lake (UWSL) will
not be offering an overflow Sub for Santa program in December. UWSL is
lending its support to the Salvation Army as the centralized coordinator of
holiday assistance programs in our community.
The community will be best served by a single community holiday assistance
coordinator, because it will be more efficient and convenient for families
in need during the holidays. The Salvation Army provides a single
centralized intake and distribution center for all of its programs, which
will be more convenient for recipients and donors alike.
The Salvation Army coordinates the KUTV 2 News Salvation Army Angel Tree
program, the U.S. Marines Toys for Tots program and the Deseret Morning News
Sub for Santa program. These are the only holiday assistance programs open
to the general public. All other holiday programs are only available to
clients within their own organization. UWSL is not a direct service
provider; its mission is to bring people and resources together to solve our
communities’ most serious social problems. As such, UWSL can make a bigger
impact by supporting the Salvation Army as the sole coordinator of community
holiday assistance programs.
“Our Board of Directors decided that it was imperative to eliminate the need
for an overflow program by supporting a single community holiday assistance
provider,” said Deborah S. Bayle, president and CEO of UWSL. “The Salvation
Army will work to serve all of the families in our community who need help
during the holidays.”
“The Salvation Army is pleased to have the support of United Way of Salt
Lake,” said Major Laura Sullivan of the Salvation Army, Salt Lake City.
“This centralized effort will help us give the most vulnerable children in
our community a joyful holiday.”
It is clear that there are people in our service area who want to offer
assistance during the holiday season. Please consider volunteering with The
Salvation Army this year, and help ease the burden of our low-income
families. Any help that you can offer will bring holiday happiness and help
to restore hope for a better future. To learn more about how you, your
family or your organization can volunteer, please call Christie Moulton at
988-4204. For information on how to contribute or provide sponsorships,
contact Major Laura Sullivan at 755-3033.

any holiday gift assistance this year.
