At Utah Data Points, Kelly Patterson analyzes the results of a recent poll and finds that most religiously active Utah Mormons, regardless of party affiliation, believe Mitt Romney's presidential candidacy will benefit the Mormon Church.

In summary, most Utah voters feel that Romney’s candidacy is overall a “good thing” for the LDS Church. However, the strength of those feelings varies across different groups of Utahns. Republicans and active Mormons are especially optimistic while Democrats and non-practicing Mormons have their doubts.

I don't think it's a good thing at all. Romney is the most prolific and unrepentant liar to run for POTUS in my lifetime. (I'm 52) It leaves the rest of us in an awkward position. Long after the election, we'll still be trying to rxplain why the first priesthood holder to win a nomination is a craven, venal, duplicitous, vapid opportunistic weasel. If a politician is to represent your faith, it should be somebody like Gandhi or President Lincoln. You don't have to be embarrassed by them.
